Smog is due soon, and I’m tired of pouring money into the stock motor. I’m open to all engine + transmission options; stock gearbox is weaksauce too.
A few ideas:
- Toyota 2GR V6 engine with E153 gearbox. Been done many times before and it’s a big, modern NA motor.
- Honda K24 & Civic Si transmission. Also well-documented & reliable, could be cheaper than the 2GR.
- Toyota RAV4 EV full powertrain swap. (Lol) Uses the same mounting hardware as the 2GR, so it should fit in the MR2 just fine. Also would still be a “same-manufacturer powertrain” for autocross class purposes.
Oppo, what’re your suggestions? At the end of the day, I just want something reliable.

No idea, but I think as Oppo's resident smog technician you should bring some blue into my shop.

Supercharged 5VZ.
B ecause an iron block V6 in the back of an MR2 is a great decision.

K20 and the 6 speed from the FG2 Civic; dead bullet proof, reliable, revs higher than the K24 , can take power with ease

My stock, NA MR2 makes more torque at 44 00 RPM than that K20 makes at any rpm. I guess I could get used to using more of the rev range though. I’m sure the K20 has a lot more CARB-legal aftermarket support too.

Yeah, stock weight distribution is 44/56 F/R, so let’s go for 30/70! Hahaha

Wouldn’t I need a Focus RS donor car? I remember searching for a CARB-certified crate ecoboost but couldn’t find one.

Too big. Might as well do an LS at that point (smaller in every dimension than the 2JZ)

Is yours a STAR smog station? Apparently I need to go to one of those this year.

Pfff honda doesn’t know what torque is, they just know what it is to rev to the moon.
Quick bolt ons and k tuner, youll be happy

It’s * possible* that it would affect the weight distribution slightly, so just be careful where you mount it.

Yup. I can test ANYTHING*.
*That I feel like testing.
And that can fit in the shop.

I want a Singer/Williams aircooled flat-6. Engine w ould sound pretty nice, and the angry indignation of the purists on both sides would sound even nicer.

Well there always the tried and tested r adial aero engine option.
If you’re going the V6 route, 2GR is the easy sensible approach, but an Alfa Busso looks and sounds about a million ti me s better, and it’s lighter (if less powerful) . Plus there’s the Dallara factor. Just sayin’.

Focus RS or Mustang Ecoboop. I think the engine also gets used in a few other cars like the Fusion and Edge/Escape but I might be wrong there.

Rotary. I don’t know what transmission you would use but this needs some doritos.

I’ve lived with a 5SFE powered Camry, a K20 powered RSX-S and a K24 powered TSX. I don’t have many nice things to say about the 5SFE and I’m amused/horrified that Toyota put it into a sports car.

Behind the rear axle, like a Porsche!
I’ll have all the front bodywork re-done in carbon fiber too. Wheelies for months.

How about the whole AWD system and engine from a FoRS, but backwards ?
Now it’s a RWD-based AWD with FRONT-axle torque vectoring like an NSX. But unlike the Acura, this FordYota will still be stick shift.

I said “reliable,” didn’t I?
Just kidding, that looks amazing and I want that one.
